This event was very low-key and the second time Danny (my
father-in-law) has officiated. VFW Post 8925 of Del Valley/Pilot Knob
sponsors this event each year at the Cook-Walden Forrest Park cemetery in
Oak Hill. Danny brought his M151A2, I had M38A1
and Toby C. brought his M151A2 hardtop.
A very nice wall has been built in memory of the fallen soldiers who
are remembered on Memorial Day of each year. The ceremony started
with Danny and the Pledge of Allegiance given by a Desert Storm
veteran. An introduction of the VFW post board members was done and
each read a short prayer followed by placing an item on a park bench in
memory of their sacrifices.
Next, a reading of the General Order of 1835(?) was read declaring
Memorial Day. A 21 gun salute and an emotional live playing of Taps
from behind those participating in the ceremony rounded out the
event. Afterwards, cookies and refreshments were served by
representatives of Cook-Walden.
Lest us never forget: All gave
some. Some gave all. |
