Move over Manor Parade - You have been ousted as the
smallest event I've attended!
The 2002 Driftwood Heritage Days Parade was an absolute success with
three LS-MVPA vehicles participating on short notice. John K brought
in his '45 MB, Lewis S drove his '52 M38A1 from Wimberley and I drove my
'53 M38A1 in from Austin.
We all met at the designated staging area at the intersection of Hwy
150 and Camp Ben McCullough road just past the world-famous Salt Lick BBQ
joint. There, we were met with great enthusiasm and were then
directed to line up along Hwy 150. After a short wait and lots of
traffic, the parade promptly began about 5 minutes late.
We drove the short 1/2 mile into the metropolis of Driftwood and
quickly completed the 200 yard parade in short order. There were approximately
200 people in attendance lining both sides of the road collecting the
candy that was thrown from entries in the parade. The parade was
well attended by many politicians, the fire department, PEC, several
churches, the Shriners, the "Tin Lizzies" with their Model T's
and other entries as well.
Afterwards, Lewis headed home and John and I parked the jeeps and headed to the small 'festival'
where there were many vendors set-up to sell cakes, cookies and baked
goods. The Hays County Sheriff department also had two of their
restored patrol units on display. (see pictures)
After a short walk through the arts and crafts area, we decided it was
time to head home. Fun - you bet. Short - yep! Next
year? For Sure. |
