Each year, the Austin Police Department solicits donations
of toys and food for families that are not so fortunate during the
holiday season. This year, some 32,000 families were assisted by
the Blue Santa efforts.
I drove the jeep to the old Municipal Airport where we waited in
line. At 8:00am, we were loaded up with large boxes (supplied by
Dell Computer) containing toys for the children in the sponsored
family. We were given a map of where the family lived and then
directed to the freezer trailer where we were given a turkey or hen to
deliver as well. I also got to meet the Austin Chief of Police,
Stan Knee. At that point, we were released to deliver our
boxes.
I delivered my two boxes to their families who were so grateful and
appreciative of the program. These truly are people who don't have
a lot. Period. It's such a joy to see their faces light up
when a large box of presents arrives. You know it would not have
been a true Christmas without the delivery. |
