What an event! Estimates were 6,500 cub and tiger
scouts descending on the State Capital of Texas. And our club came
through with flying colors to support Oak Hill Pack 395 of the Comanche
District. Fred with his MB/M100, Scott with his M38A1/M416, Toby and
his MB/M100, Danny and his M151A2/M416, Barry with the 'buggy' and Bill M. all made it on
the very chilly morning.
We arrived at the Austin American Statesman parking lot and waited for
the scouts to arrive. As they filtered in, we realized we may be
able to haul everyone including the parents for the parade. About
8:30, we loaded up the vehicles with kids and parents and staged
ourselves. As usual, the staging process has a lot of work needed to
make it smooth but overall went well. The kids however were becoming
restless with the cold. (about 29F at sunrise)
Once the parade got started, it went without a hitch. All the
kids tossed candy, lots of pictures were taken, lots of hand waves and
comments about the vehicles and then our return to the Statesman parking
lot. There was one casualty however. Danny's M151A2 died after
the parade and on his way back to the parking lot. Scott and Bill M.
drove Danny's truck and trailer to where it died, hooked up the winch and
pulled the dead jeep onto the trailer and secured it.
Once secured, we returned to the parking lot and dropped off the
remaining scouts with their parents. By now, the temp had warmed up
to 40F - maybe.....
