Long Range Desert Convention |
Date: |
18/20-May-01 |
Location: |
Lakeway, Texas |
Description: |
"60's TV Goes To War" was the topic of this
wonderful three day event. Nestled in the beautiful hills of Lakeway
Texas at Vista Villas, the club brought an impressive display of vehicles
and equipment. The event was staged around fans of 1960's era
television shows such as The Rat Patrol, Hogan's Heros etc. There
were many forums and panels throughout the weekend event dealing with
topics from authenticity to trivia. Our historic military vehicle club was treated as if we
were guests ourselves and many thanks go to the organizer Carol Burrell.
An auction was also held which benefited the Red Cross. The auction
raised in excess of $1,700 with the highest bid item at $675 for a tan
shirt in which Gary Raymond wore during filming of The Rat Patrol.
Barry setup an impressive WWII display of his shelters for shade which
also included a medical cot area, a fantastic display of firearms
including both long guns and pistols, several uniform types from various
periods of the war, and many tables of knives, grenades and memorabilia
from the WWII period. To top it off, he wore his 82nd Airborne
uniform the entire weekend and he received many compliments from the event
participants!
John, Toby and Jeff brought their WWII Willys MB's which were very
popular for photographs with the honored guest, Mr. Gary Raymond (aka:
Jack Moffitt) of The Rat Patrol. A few members now have signed
glove-box door covers!
I trailered my '53 M38A1 to represent Korea and Danny brought
his '70 M151A2 for Vietnam. Both had mannequins dressed in period
correct uniform. All members wore period correct uniforms as
well. Jim W even showed up for a few hours from San Antonio. |

jeep had just increased by $1,000! Of course, I told him the picture
would cost him $500 for proof! :-) |
