The following text and scans have been taken from TB 746-93-1, "Color and Marking of Military Vehicles, Construction Equipment and Materials Handling Equipment" dated October 1964, Headquarters, Department of the Army.  This manual specifies the parameters of how details in stars, placement and paint is to be done on all vehicle types for the Mid-60's.  Please remember, these are only excerpts and you should purchase a copy for the complete information.  I've listed enough information to probably answer your question or get you started down the correct path.  Portrayal Press  (Parts and Suppliers section) can provide these reprints.

I'll be working as time permits on the 1950's version of the manual as well.  Stay tuned.
