Another long weekend with little rest.
After working all day, I headed over to Kaiserville to pick up
my big 20' trailer and load the little 'baby pit' for a weekend of
cooking burgers and sausage wraps for the guys. I headed
home and then loaded up the jeep along with everything I would
need for the weekend and was on the road to Temple by 7pm.
About 8:30 or so I rolled in, found the group and unloaded
everything. This was to be a simple cook for the guys this
time. "Jeep Burgers" and sausage wraps. A
jeep burger is basically a jalapeno bacon cheesburger with some
'extras' added like a mango-ginger-habanaro pepper glaze and some
seasonings. Danny, Toby and I were staying in town, so
we headed in from the airport, had a quick bite of Mexican food
and called it a night.
Saturday morning we were met with gray skies and a light
mist. Argh...... It's just not fun to cook in weather
like this. After all, it was only a 30% chance of rain and
it was a dark morning to boot. The evening before I had left
a tray of packaged Danish and a box of OJ for the guys as I said
I'd provide breakfast too. We have some members who opt to
stay at the show in their large trucks.
I fired up the pit and prepped the burgers and fixings as well
as tossed on a variety of sausage links. We had
planned on about 16 people for Saturday lunch and 15 for Sunday
lunch so I cooked the whole 'bag' of 24 burgers each day.
One thing we do when there are leftovers is to invite anybody
walking the show to eat a free burger. We had a few takers
both days and they were appreciative. Saturday I also warmed
up a pork butt that I had from the Muster Day event and that
disappeared in flour tortillas in short order.
Sunday was the same but with the addition of some venison
sausage from Don L. out of Bryan/College Station. That was
some good eating! Two kinds of chips complimented the
burgers along with 'pogey bait' from Rory and Jeff.
The airshow was fun although we all decided we don't go for the
shows or crowds anymore. We go for the food and friendship
and all our discussions sipping whiskey, smoking cigars and trying
to solve the worlds problems with some very fine aircraft
overhead. |
