This little neighborhood parade has been in
existence since 1977 or so and is a lot of fun. The past few
years I've attended this instead of the Lakeway July 4th parade in
Lakeway, Texas with the rest of the club.
As Austin and surrounding areas have been in rain for the past
14 days or so, and the weather radar showed a huge
yellow/red/green mess just to the South, I figured this would be
another wet parade. Wet parades mean the jeep takes about 5
or 6 days to dry out when the canvas gets a good soaking. So
with that, I took my rain gear (jacket and pants) and had the top
up on the jeep and headed North to Farwest Blvd. I met the
parental units and hung around there for a bit, then wandered to
the staging area at Waterline and Far West Blvd. There
weren't many vehicles as the threat of rain was still around, but
about 8:45am, a ton of people and vehicles showed up.
With the parade starting at about 9:15, Dad, Leah and I
followed the procession down Far West Blvd to Doss Elementary
school where the parade terminated. Along the way, dad saw a
lot of his friends and they always get a kick out of seeing the
jeep in the parade. Both sides of the street were lined with
cheering, flag waving residents. John K also made it in his
'45 MB and hauled his martial arts friends.
The parade took about 30 minutes to complete and we headed back
to Mom and Dads place for a great brunch. A few brief
showers kept popping up while we ate, but the jeep was in the
garage and stayed dry. When it looked like a great break in
the clouds, I made a dash South to home with no rain along the
way.
Again, another great little event for the jeep! |
