If you don't attend a Veterans Day event, shame on
you.
And if you do, the Austin parade up Congress Ave is a good
one! The club had a lot of vehicles and members out for
2006. We're getting to the point of these events as routine
and this was no different. Herb and I drove over from the
house and we met at the TxDot parking lot about 7:15 or so.
By 7:30am we had Danny and his M37, me and my M38A1 and Dad, Herb
and his GPW, Glen and his CJ2A, Rick H and his M38A1, Fred H and
his Navy CJ2A, Madison H and his M37. Also showing up were
Bill B and Kenny W.
At 7:30 we meandered our way on to the bridge for
staging. This year we were going to be hauling several
different groups but we agreed as a club we would keep the
vehicles together. We made it to the bridge and staged with
no problem other than Rory and Jeff with the big trucks had not
arrived. Knowing we were going to have to haul a lot of
people, we started to make plans on how we would accomplish
that. Turns out, they were delayed in their arrival from the
event prior to ours and they showed up. Rory was in his 5
ton with Caitlin and Jeff was in his duece with Rory's son
Patrick.
After numerous pictures with the South Vietnamese army group in
my M38A1, the parade finally started. We headed up Congress
Ave to a good crowd. It's been better in the past, and it's
been worse, but overall there was a good turn-out. At the
Capitol, we made the turn to head South and back to TxDot where
Fred's daughter and his sons/grandkids had brought a birthday
cake. We were treated to cake and coffee which was a welcome
surprise. Happy Birthday Fred!
After our bellies were full, we all gathered up and headed
home.
